Chinese Scientists Made Glowing Plants #worldresearchawards

For millions of years, fireflies have relied on a precise chemical ballet to signal for mates in the summer dusk. Meanwhile, deep-forest fungi emit a ghostly luminescence to attract spore-dispersing insects. Now, biotechnology is borrowing these ancient evolutionary tricks to reinvent our urban streetlights.

Chinese researchers recently reported genetically engineering living, glowing flowers. By borrowing DNA from fireflies and bioluminescent fungi, scientists have essentially transformed ordinary flora into self-sustaining lanterns.

Researchers at the biotechnology company Magicpen Bio recently engineered more than twenty plant species to emit a steady, visible light in the dark. Orchids, sunflowers, and chrysanthemums can now glow entirely on their own, requiring no power source, unlike conventional street lighting.

Instead of relying on the harsh, energy-intensive glare of municipal streetlamps, future cities could illuminate parks and walkways using bioluminescent plants that run simply on water and fertilizer.

The inspiration for these glowing gardens was sparked decades ago in rural China. Before Dr. Li Renhan became the founder of a cutting-edge biotech startup and earned a Ph.D. from China Agricultural University, he was simply a boy marveling at the natural world.

“I was born in the countryside. Back then, my family didn’t have any money, so at night I could do nothing but lie in a hammock in my grandfather’s bamboo grove to cool off. Fireflies often landed on my arms,” Dr. Li told Euronews.

Years later, while studying genetic editing, Li found himself wondering whether the genetic instructions that make a firefly glow could be inserted into the DNA of a sunflower.

“We wanted to transfer genes from animals, like those of fireflies, into plants, so they could also glow at night. We’re dedicated to bringing this technology to cultural tourism and the nighttime economy. Imagine a valley filled with glowing plants in the dark, it would be like bringing the ‘Avatar’ world to Earth,” Li explained.
