The Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath, is preparing to plant more than 35 crore saplings this monsoon season as part of its efforts to increase green cover. The Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Department has commenced preparations, with 49.22 crore saplings being readied in the department's nurseries and an additional 1.88 crore in the Horticulture and Sericulture departments, totaling over 51.10 crore saplings.
Continuing the trend from previous years, over 20 per cent, or 7 crore saplings, will be fruit-bearing trees. In addition, timber, environmental, medicinal, fodder, and ornamental species will also be planted. A wide variety of species are being cultivated in the nurseries for the monsoon plantation drive.
Timber species include teak, rosewood, catechu, sandalwood, ebony, bamboo, silk cotton tree, sal, palm, bakli, kumbi, and camphor. Environmental species include palash, sacred fig, peepal, banyan, casuarina, kanji, katsagon, khamer, gutel, chilbil, and dhak.
Over 27 species of fruit-bearing trees are being prepared in the forest department's nurseries, including medicinal varieties such as bael, Indian gooseberry, wood apple, Java plum, black plum, and myrobalan.
Other fruit trees include custard apple, jackfruit, pomegranate, chironji, papaya, karonda, lemon, Indian plum, fig, cluster fig, mahua, mango, guava, mulberry, date palm, jungle jalebi, tamarind, pomegranate, and jujube. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Sunil Chaudhary, stated that 20 per cent of the total plantation will be fruit trees, maintaining the practice from previous years.
Medicinal and aromatic plants include drumstick, neem, arjuna, ashoka, kadam, kanak champa, oleander, acacia, silver oak, Indian almond, night-blooming jasmine, hibiscus, rose, gold mohar, bougainvillea, maulsari, sami, rohan, tamal, haldu, and drumstick.
Over 32 species of fodder and ornamental plants are also being prepared, including kusum, bakain, babool, kachnar, white siris, golden shower tree, albizia amara, black siris, bottlebrush, jacaranda, acacia, and August flower.
